What's the big deal about financial freedom? What's the big difference between someone who is financially independent and myself? Two great questions worth exploring further.

To most people, Question #1 is a no-brainer. Who wouldn't want to live a life of no more personal debt, time and resources to do basically whatever you wished, enough resources (time/money) to travel the world and live one adventure after another, and even enough money to help others in need.

But the reality for many people - is living paycheck to paycheck, working a job that they really don't like, and because of all this “necessary work" they have no time to truly pursue their passions in life.

Life for many becomes an automatic cycle of work, paying bills, and maybe if we're real lucky, a few hours a week towards entertainment or pursuit of an interest. The drudgery of yet another week of the same routine can engulf us like a black cloud.

I would bet that many people have wished for a life of more adventure and less concern about money, but deep down many of these same people feel such a life is just not possible for them. That leads us on to an answer for Question #2.

At the basic level, there really is no difference between someone who is financially independent, and someone who isn't - Potentially, we are all the same.

On top of that - everyone has the right to pursue life to the fullest and obtain the necessary resources (time/money) needed to pursue their life's purposes and passions.

With that said, the real difference between those who have achieved financial freedom and those who haven't really comes down one important fact.

Those who have achieved Financial Independence have acquired the necessary knowledge - and through positive actions, have developed the time-tested skills required for obtaining and sustaining Financial Freedom.

Financial independence is obtainable for anyone, and doesn't require huge sacrifices to achieve. By applying some simple time tested knowledge and learning some basic financial skills, it really is possible for basically anyone to achieve all the wealth they desire in a short period of time.

This does not mean that we should jump on the next "get rich quick" scheme, and hope that it will bring something we desire. Time and time again, it has been proven that without learning the necessary fundamental financial skills, most people have been unable to sustain any wealth they may have acquired. (Just think of all of those big lottery winners who eventually lose it all.)

True financial freedom that will last is the result of applying time-tested knowledge to our lives. The following steps are important requirements for financial independence:

• Learning basic financial principles that will teach us how to spend wisely and therefore create the necessary income needed for investment and business opportunities.

Along with improving our personal budgets and credit, a strong understanding of basic financial principles is essential for wealth building and ultimate financial freedom.

Armed with a good working knowledge of financial statements, the difference between an asset and liability, and basic business and investing principles, the path to financial independence is all but assured.

Earlier we talked about the importance of eliminating unnecessary debt and finding ways to increase our credit rating. Both of these previous steps are vital as we pursue financing for investments and business opportunities.

When we do incur debt related to investments and/or businesses, this debt is referred to as "good debt". Good debt is sometimes necessary when we work to create an asset that will generate a positive cash flow for us.

The ability to turn debt into wealth is really the ability to tell the difference between good debt and bad debt. While most of us intuitively know the difference when it comes to good debt and bad debt, let's examine this a little further.

Essentially, "good debt" is debt that will be used to create an asset that will generate cash flow, and any other form of debt is considered "bad debt", that is also referred to as a liability.

As mentioned before, one of the best paths to financial freedom is to develop assets that will bring in a steady stream of residual income that won't require enormous amounts of time to operate once the asset has been established.
